My husband (originally German, now US citizen) and I (Japanese, lived in Germany for 8 years) provide homestay for the last 10 years. We have a 14 room + 5 bathroom English Tudor house 10 miles from Manhattan (NJ site) with a half-acre backyard and several public transportation options to New York City. In fact, both my husband and I work in and commute to the "City".
